Can Cherry Tree Root SPROUTS be stopped?

After a storm a small cherry tree was cut down. A new tree started growing again.and 6 Ft. high fan flower type plants covered the new tree base. Root sprouts grew around base. They grew in between the tall flowers and were not in view. Now the flowers are dead and there are 5 ft root sprouts all around the base of the tree. What can i do to remove the 5 ft. sprouts without killing the tree? If i any plant killer it will kill the tree also. If i cut the sprouts it may increase the growth of the sprouts. We want to save the baby tree. Please help! Thank You

Can Cherry Tree Root SPROUTS be stopped?
You'll have to remove the tap roots to the sprouts you want to kill. To do this you'll need a sharp long-handled spade shovel. Cut down around the sprouts you want removed - all the way to the root (it's called a tap root because it is attached to the main tree's root system) and sever the sprout's root which is attached to the main root system. You may have to dig sideways a bit after you find the root to do it.

It will be a good deal of work, but if you are like me you are enjoying the new Spring weather enough to endure the work outdoors.
