I live in the UK and would like to plant a climber that will grow quickly!!! from seed or baby plant? Perhaps a flowering type too?
Whats the best quick growing hardy climber I can plant now?
I believe most of the UK is a zone 7 (same as here on Long Island.) Four years ago I needed a flowering climber in my backyard. I planted wisteria. Here it is four years later, and the wisteria is the talk of the neighborhood. Trim it hard every fall to ensure a huge amount of flowers next spring.
Reply:I always just go into the plant/garden place and ask a person who works there my questions. They know their plants and can help you out. I am in the USA and can not tell you what grows best in the UK.
Reply:I'm in the uk too...List as follows but best bought as plants
1. Clematis armandii- Evergreen, white flowers march/april,
VERY fast growing, probably the fastest I know
2.Clematis montana- Deciduous, pink or white flowers spring,
single or double flowers depending on variety, very fast once established
3.Lonicera (honeysuckle)-lots to choose from but the red
varieties are not as fast growing or as hardy.Summer flowering
4.Polygonum baldschuanica(also known as Fallopia or
Bilderdykia baldschanica) common names mile a
minute plant/russian vine, deciduous pink or white flowers
summer,very fast twiner
5. Rambling rose-lots to choose from, I like 'Albertine' its pale
pink and scented.
If you are looking for a climber to grow from seed try sweet peas or nasturtiums but they will only last one season. You could try taking cuttings of plants from the above list if you have a friendly gardening neighbour to help.
Just an extra note- anything that is fast growing will become large unless you prune it
Happy hunting :-) and yes just read previous answer-wisteria would be ok- pink, blue or white flowers summer.
Reply:This isn't a flowering type but the best and hardiest climber has to be ivy, it is really attractive as well.
